The Fisherman's Retreat in Pico

You couldn’t be closer to the water’s edge in our self-catering suite at the head of a slipway and old historic port. Whether your choice is bathing in the warm, clear, Gulf Stream waters, fishing, diving or boating, it is all available, and you can rent boats with or without skipper.

The space

We are also positioned in a UNESCO protected area, right at the starting point of a popular hiking trail that meanders through a UNESCO designated, historic, rock-walled, Verdelho grape growing area.

For the more adventurous, the imposing Pico Mountain, the highest in Portugal at 2,351 meters, offers climbers the opportunity to climb a classic volcanic ‘cone’ and from the summit have the unsurpassed view of the entire central group of islands.

Pico also signifies the epic nature of whale-hunting. Nowadays this has evolved into the chance to observe these giants of the sea, to follow swiftly moving dolphins and appreciate the peaceful life of the many whale species that frequent the island waters.

After an active day of whale watching, mountain climbing, hiking, diving or just relaxing at the ocean side, be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks or the eerie sound of Cory´s shearwater (the local “Cagarros”) moving ghostly through the dark sky.
